Memorial Day means so many things to us: white dresses and pants are once again appropriate, sun bathing with a good book at the beach is the ultimate way to relax for the next few months and when one wants a sweet treat- look no further  then the ice cream man on the corner.

The Jersey Shore circa 1905 shows Ice Cream sandwiches were popular at 1c each.

Ice Cream sandwiches are as about American as Apple Pie, but are enjoyed all around the world in different forms. The current (and traditional) version  of the Ice Cream Sandwich we know today was invented in 1945 by Jerry Newberg when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field in Philadelphia.

Today, we associate the ice cream sandwich as the traditional combination of a slice of ice cream, commonly vanilla although other flavors are sometimes used, sandwiched between two wafers, usually chocolate and rectangular.

We decided it was time to Dylanize this classic and headed to the NYC Candy Cafe for some inspiration and, of course, some ice cream :)

Dylan’s Candy Bar Loaded Ice Cream Sandwiches

Ingredients (Makes 3):

16-18oz of your favorite ice cream (not too hard or too melted) We used the Classic DCB favorites: Circus, banana Chocolate Brownie, and Candy Bar Blast

2 DCB Fruity Rice Crispy treats

1 DCB Belgian Chocolate Dipped Blondie

1 DCB Belgian Chocolate Dipped Blondie

2 XL Cookies ( We used Sugar and M&M Cookies)

Any additional toppings of your choice (Gummy bears, Chocolate Chips, Sprinkles etc.)

  1. Put all of your ingredients on the surface of a clean work space, so they are all ready to be used
  2. Pair similar flavors of ice cream and cookies, brownies and rice crispy treats. Or mix it up and try new combos!
  3.  Place the cookie, brownie or crispy treat face down and put the ice cream on top like you are making a regular sandwich
  4. Place the other brownie, cookie or crispy treat on top and press it down until there is a solid adhesion to the ice cream. Make your own variations like Ice Cream Sandwich Sliders, for a small treat!
  5. Once you have the finished Sandwich, you can roll the exposed Ice cream sides in fun toppings, put in the freezer for your summer party ( Store in an Air Tight Container for best results ), or eat right away!

A work out that gives back

Jersey and I are so excited for our big Memorial Day plans! This Saturday I am hosting a charity ride at Flywheel Sports in East Hampton to benefit The MCSPCA, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and advocating for all animals. The Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is also where I adoped Jersey. Jersey was brought to the adoption center in January of this year after being rescued from underneath a trailer in an industrial park in Puerto Rico. She is now happy and healthy and we are so thankfull for the MCSPCA!

Just Jared Jr. followed Stefanie Scott, star on the Disney Channel’s “A.N.T. Farm,” around NYC, and guess what? She clearly loves Dylan’s Candy Bar. We love her, too!

Stefanie enjoys brownie pops in our Cafe as much as we do!

Dylan Loves: Candy Stripe Shoes

I love my new shoes!  They are by Reef, and are so comfy and have that perfect blend of fun and classy. One of the reasons I decided to open Dylan’s Candy Bar is  because I have always been in love with bright candy colors and saw so much potential in pushing candy into the design and art world. And it’s as if these shoes are candy-inspired! Their brightness sure do inspire me.

Me wearing my REEF TROPIC "Bella Costa" flats!

On top of it all, when I went to purchase them online, I learned that the shoes are crafted by artisans in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala. By partnering with the nonprofit organization, Nest, Reef is providing an opportunity for these women to create a sustainable living.

I encourage you to learn more about the Nest organization at http://www.buildanest.org and brighten up more than just your own day by getting a pair. Or two!

The Purple M&M is joining the 8oz. M&M’S Milk Chocolate and Peanut Chocolate Candies Stand-Up Pouches later this year!

Here is a little History:

Forrest Mars Sr. is the inventor of the M&M,  and patented his colorful candy coated chocolate in 1941. Ironically, they originally used Hershey’s chocolate because Bruce Murrie (son of Hershey’s President at the time) was a co-founder of M&Ms having a 20% stake in the product.  They were made in five colors: red, yellow, brown, green, and violet. They were packaged in a cardboard tube. M&M stands for Mars & Murrie

Originally, the candy was actually only sold to armed forces to carry with them during times of battle when a solid meal would be hard to find.  The chocolate gave energy on the go, but didn’t melt in the packs.  Hence their slogan, “Melt in your mouth not in your hand!” (Lucky for us they are no longer exclusively sold to the military :) )

In 1995, Mars ran a promotion in which consumers were invited to vote on which of blue, pink, or purple would replace the tan M&M’s. Blue was the winner, replacing tan in early 1995, but now purple is making its big debut in the standup 8oz bags of the Peanut and Plain varieties!

Stefanie Scott (aka Lexi Reed) from the Disney Channel Show, ANT Farm! was visiting our NYC flagship store today. And she got a sneak peek of a brand new section in our store called “COLOR YOUR WORLD” where you can shop candies by color!

We are ecstatic that Stefanie Scott loves our new shop-by-color section as much as we do! Isn't her yellow dress perfect by the yellow candies?!

Official launch of “COLOR YOUR WORLD” is next month, but stop by if you want to see its progress. To make it immediately accessible, we have opened up as much of this new section as we could to the general public already.

We are so excited about all of this!!!

Hey, and send us a picture of yourself in your favorite color in front of our “COLOR YOUR WORLD” wall. We just may feature it in our blog soon!

Little Mommy Event

Every little girl loves to pretend that she is a real mommy! Mattel’s new Little Mommy doll collection had the cutest mother-daughter mommy day event at our very own Dylan’s Candy Bar Café in NYC!

Little Mommy bibs were strung on clothing lines across the candy cafe.

The candy café was transformed into a world of adorable baby dolls and accessories.

While the little mommies spent the morning with their loveable baby dolls, they munched on delicious sweets and even made their own flower bouquets at the flower bar.
