We are always having a blast in the office, especially when new sweets arrive! Everyone tested our new sour candy and I got to go around and snap people’s reactions (life is so hard – haha!), and these are some of the best pictures from the lemon flavor! Which sour face is your favorite? Mine is Kristin’s :)

Memorial Day means so many things to us: white dresses and pants are once again appropriate, sun bathing with a good book at the beach is the ultimate way to relax for the next few months and when one wants a sweet treat- look no further  then the ice cream man on the corner.

The Jersey Shore circa 1905 shows Ice Cream sandwiches were popular at 1c each.

Ice Cream sandwiches are as about American as Apple Pie, but are enjoyed all around the world in different forms. The current (and traditional) version  of the Ice Cream Sandwich we know today was invented in 1945 by Jerry Newberg when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field in Philadelphia.

Today, we associate the ice cream sandwich as the traditional combination of a slice of ice cream, commonly vanilla although other flavors are sometimes used, sandwiched between two wafers, usually chocolate and rectangular.

We decided it was time to Dylanize this classic and headed to the NYC Candy Cafe for some inspiration and, of course, some ice cream :)

Dylan’s Candy Bar Loaded Ice Cream Sandwiches

Ingredients (Makes 3):

16-18oz of your favorite ice cream (not too hard or too melted) We used the Classic DCB favorites: Circus, banana Chocolate Brownie, and Candy Bar Blast

2 DCB Fruity Rice Crispy treats

1 DCB Belgian Chocolate Dipped Blondie

1 DCB Belgian Chocolate Dipped Blondie

2 XL Cookies ( We used Sugar and M&M Cookies)

Any additional toppings of your choice (Gummy bears, Chocolate Chips, Sprinkles etc.)

  1. Put all of your ingredients on the surface of a clean work space, so they are all ready to be used
  2. Pair similar flavors of ice cream and cookies, brownies and rice crispy treats. Or mix it up and try new combos!
  3.  Place the cookie, brownie or crispy treat face down and put the ice cream on top like you are making a regular sandwich
  4. Place the other brownie, cookie or crispy treat on top and press it down until there is a solid adhesion to the ice cream. Make your own variations like Ice Cream Sandwich Sliders, for a small treat!
  5. Once you have the finished Sandwich, you can roll the exposed Ice cream sides in fun toppings, put in the freezer for your summer party ( Store in an Air Tight Container for best results ), or eat right away!

The Purple M&M is joining the 8oz. M&M’S Milk Chocolate and Peanut Chocolate Candies Stand-Up Pouches later this year!

Here is a little History:

Forrest Mars Sr. is the inventor of the M&M,  and patented his colorful candy coated chocolate in 1941. Ironically, they originally used Hershey’s chocolate because Bruce Murrie (son of Hershey’s President at the time) was a co-founder of M&Ms having a 20% stake in the product.  They were made in five colors: red, yellow, brown, green, and violet. They were packaged in a cardboard tube. M&M stands for Mars & Murrie

Originally, the candy was actually only sold to armed forces to carry with them during times of battle when a solid meal would be hard to find.  The chocolate gave energy on the go, but didn’t melt in the packs.  Hence their slogan, “Melt in your mouth not in your hand!” (Lucky for us they are no longer exclusively sold to the military :) )

In 1995, Mars ran a promotion in which consumers were invited to vote on which of blue, pink, or purple would replace the tan M&M’s. Blue was the winner, replacing tan in early 1995, but now purple is making its big debut in the standup 8oz bags of the Peanut and Plain varieties!

M&M Colors through the years..
